WEBCOMICS I LOVE

this is a list of webcomics i love! most of these are currently ongoing but a few of them have been completed or are on hiatus/possibly abandoned. summaries are lifted from the webcomics themselves unless otherwise specificed!

PARANATURAL || ongoing

    "Paranatural is a comedy/action comic about a group of superpowered middle schoolers fighting evil spirits and investigating paranormal activity in their hometown."

literally the webcomic of ALL TIME. i've been reading paranatural for about a decade now and it's never been anything less than stellar. one of the funniest and most creative comics i've ever encountered. in recent months, the author has switched up formatting due to wrist strain and now it's mostly prose with key illustrations, but that hasn't detracted from the quality of the comic at all. cannot recommend it enough!

NEVER SATISFIED || discontinued

    "Never Satisfied is an on-going webcomic about Lucy Marlowe, a magician's apprentice competing against other apprentices for an important magical government position, dealing with issues of class differences and how hard it can be to understand others."

another favorite of mine that i've been reading for many years! taylor robin is a master of creative character design and the way the world and plot of the comic has unfolded is incredible. i liked it so much that i bought a physical copy of it!

WITCHY || hiatus

    "In the witch kingdom Hyalin, the strength of your magic is determined by the length of your hair. Those that are strong enough are conscripted by the Witch Guard, who enforce the law in peacetime and protect the land during war. However, those with hair judged too long are pronounced enemies of the kingdom, and annihilated. This is called a witch burning.

    Witchy is an ongoing webcomic about the young witch Nyneve, who is haunted by the death of her father and the threat the Witch Guard poses to her own life. When conscription rolls around, Nyneve has a choice to make; join the institution complicit in her father’s death, or stand up for her ideals?"

not only is the worldbuilding and premise of the comic unique and interesting, the art is amazing! Ariel Slamet Ries (the creator) is very talented and i own multiple published comics of theirs, including physical versions of witchy vol. 1 and vol. 2. they're currently working on a graphic novel that i can't wait to get my hands on.

SOIL THAT BINDS US || ongoing

    "This is a world torn apart by restless ghosts and spirits: Mediums– those who can connect to and talk to the dead–are incredibly valuable and incredibly dangerous. Most medium children are raised their entire lives in a Parafacility to learn how to control their gifts, the dangers of possession, and experimented on learn how to find a way to fight the ghosts.

    Soil that Binds Us follows the adventures of a few fugitive mediums who can talk to ghosts and their journey to stop the world from becoming completely undone by the undead. "

this comic rivals paranatural in it's impeccable sense of humor, but that's not all it's got going for it. STBU is full of interesting characters, fascinating worldbuilding, beautiful art, and GHOSTS! what more could you want? it's quite long, but reading through it is a breeze because it's just that good!

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT || ongoing

    (since i can't find an about page on the comic's site, i'll write my own)

    What Happens Next is a comic following Milo, an internet-poisoned trans young adult that helped his best friend (equally Online) commit murder as a teenager and all the consequences that followed. It's about abuse, human complexity, morality, and also tumblr discourse. And it's very good.

whenever anyone on social media complains about the lack of grey morality in fiction "these days" or whatever, i want to get on my hands and knees and beg them to read WHN. never have i read such an accurate portrayal of the impact of 2010s tumblr culture that manages to not pull any punches regarding the bad and the good of that era and all it did. this comic deserves to be studied by anthropologists for decades to come.

SUPERPOSE || ongoing

    "While a tourist destination boasting a popular beach and boardwalk, Port City is also home to ROMAN LABS, an aerospace-turned-tech company now floundering in the tech boom of the early 1980s.

    Rafael and Royal are longtime locals, and Kas is recently beached here. Each of the three are struggling and desperate for some kind of change, and they seize a brief opportunity to alter their future, finally shaking the town, and their lives, from standstill..."

i sat down and read the entire backlog in one 4-hour sprint and i was floored. the art is cinematic in a way i haven't seen in a webcomic before, and i really enjoy the style of each page. there are at least two characters that i went in thinking "hmm i don't know if i'll like this one" only to eat my words like two pages after their introduction. do you like 80s movies? do you like science fiction? do you like trans people? do you like dramatic irony? all of these things are plentiful and handled SO well in SUPERPOSE! so you should read it and fall in love with it like i did

I'M STRANGE(AND SO ARE YOU) || ongoing

    "StrangeChat is a chatroom for “passionate individuals who dedicate their lives to the investigation and discussion of the paranormal in pursuit of the TRUTH.”

    It has four active users.

    And it’s just about time to start planning StrangeChat’s First Ever Real Life Meet Up! The dedicated regulars of StrangeChat have only one year before this event… and only one year to sort out their own emotional and supernatural baggage."

fun fact! this webcomic existing is directly responsible for the ttrpg group i've been in for over 6 years! and that is because the creator of this webcomic is also in that group. moe's art is TOP TIER, they are a master of expressive poses, incredible character design, and the very real skill to get a little weird with it. ISASAY is hilarious, heartwarming, and such a genuine and loving portrayal of little internet freaks coming together (plus! mothman is there!). read this dang webcomic!

SO LONG, BLOODSUCKERS || ongoing

    "One day in elementary school, Avery Anderson makes a childish blood oath with Julio “Lolo” Jimenez to be Best Friends Forever.

    Ten years later, both the oath and Julio come back to bite him when Avery’s formerly-missing childhood friend returns to inform him of a blood ritual gone horribly wrong. With their life forces now inexorably linked and being hunted down by a doomsday cult, they must to kill their way to the top of a dark conspiracy to save their own skins- and the world.

    And maybe finally catch up on the important things. Like if they still like bionicles."

vampires? horny gore? monstrous body horror? BLOOD? this comic has everything you could ask for. and there's even a gross (affectionate) woman. the way we see avery and lolo's relationship contrasted from Then and Now is such interesting character work and if the stellar inking doesn't hook you, the blood bond will.

HOLE || ongoing

    "Hole centers on 27 year old Jane Nowak who is forced to confront her tumultuous past when the ghost of her childhood best friend/rival Asenath "Nat" White begins to torment her. As the haunting takes its toll on Jane, forcing her deeper into a spiral that affects her performance at her job and tanking her mental health, she must relive the trauma of what happened between her and Nat in high school and the bodies left in their wake."

the art style is very charming, the way it's building tension is masterful, and i'm SO interested in the backstory we're seeing be crafted between these teens-turned-young-adults-turned-(some)-ghosts. we're in early days but i can't wait to see where it's going!

SAKANA || ongoing

    SAKANA is a slice-of-life, romantic comedy (a sli-li-rom-com, if you will) that takes place in the Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo, Japan. If follows the lives of a few 20-somethings working at the market, their friends and family, and all the wacky situations they constantly find themselves in despite their best efforts. Basically they all want to date each other, but they're all terrible at it, and also there's lots of seafood involved.

i slept on this comic for so long considering that so many comic creators i love support it but man it really is as good as everyone says it is! super entertaining, wonderfully endearing characters, and the creator's talent for composition, paneling, and inks can't be overstated.

DEAD AIR || ongoing

    "HDEAD AIR is a webcomic about 13 killers competing to win the 10th season of beloved game show SUPER TEMPTATION."

this comic kicks off with a bang and just does not stop going (and i mean that in the MOST complimentary way!). literally a wild ride that's only getting wilder. also lots of serial killer lesbians.

HEARTSTOPPER || ongoing

    "Charlie, a highly-strung, openly gay over-thinker, and Nick, a cheerful, soft-hearted rugby player, meet at a British all-boys grammar school. Friendship blooms quickly, but could there be something more...?"

something important to know about me is that i LOVE cheesy teen romance, and heartstopper is the epitome of cheesy teen romance! i only started reading the comic when i watched the netflix TV show for the first time and it imprinted in my brain, but since then i've reread the entire comic probably 5 times at this point. it's cute, it's fun, and i like the way the teens and their problems are written and treated by the narrative.

CHECK PLEASE! || complete

    "Eric Bittle—former Georgia junior figure skating champion, vlogger extraordinaire, and amateur pâtissier—is starting his freshman year playing hockey at the prestigious Samwell University in Samwell, Massachusetts. And it’s basically nothing like co-ed club hockey back in the South. For one?

    There’s checking.

    It’s a story about hockey and friendship and bros and trying to find yourself during the best 4 years of your life."

check please is an absolute gem of a comic! it's been complete for quite a few years, but it's one i regularly come back to because it's never lost its shine. anything the creator puts out is an instant pre-order for me, and i've never been let down. the comic itself is full of humor, love, and managed to capture my heart despite my epic lack of hockey knowledge to this day.

O HUMAN STAR || complete

    Alastair Sterling was the inventor who sparked the robot revolution. And because of his sudden death, he didn’t see any of it. That is, until he wakes up 16 years later in a robot body that matches his old one exactly. Until he steps outside and finds a world utterly unlike the one he left behind – a world where robots live alongside their human neighbors and coexist in their cities. A world he helped create. Now Al must track down his old partner Brendan to find out who is responsible for Al’s unexpected resurrection, but their reunion raises even more questions. Like who the robot living with Brendan is. And why she looks like Al. And how much of the past should stay in the past…

i've heard tell of this comic for years and i finally sat down and dedicated approximately 24 hours to devouring the entire thing. a comic with three colors total that knows how to use them so effectively. every reveal, every emotional scene, every bedroom conversation depicted in this comic was absolute gut punch. and it's so throuroughly trans from the ground up, i loved it!
